Republican U.S. Senate candidate Rik Mehta raised just $155,825 between July 1 and September 30 for his bid to oust incumbent Cory Booker, and has only $61,934 cash-on-hand.
The former U.S. Food and Drug Administration official loaned his campaign $315,000 to win the July Republican primary, but has not added any cash for his general election race.
Booker reported raising almost $2.6 million in the 3rd quarter of this year and had $5.2 million in his re-election warchest.
Mehta’s campaign received a boost from former GOP U.S. Senate candidate Bob Hugin and his wife, Kathy, who each contributed $2,800. Republican gubernatorial candidate Jack Ciattarelli sent Mehta $1,000.
Republicans have not won a U.S. Senate race in New Jersey since 1972. Since that time, the GOP has elected a U.S. Senator in every state but Hawaii.
