Former gubernatorial candidate Jim Johnson endorsed Brigid Harrison’s second-district House bid Friday.
“Atlantic City is in crisis and Brigid Callahan Harrison is the best congressional candidate in NJ-02 to take on the new challenges the city faces; she has offered sound, thorough policy solutions; she loves South Jersey and she will beat Jeff Van Drew,” said Johnson, who served as Gov. Phil Murphy’s special counsel for Atlantic City’s transition.
Johnson finished third in Atlantic City during his 2017 gubernatorial bid, winning 18% of the vote where Harrison rival Amy Kennedy has the support of the local Democratic organization.
The endorsement is a potential boon for Harrison, whose opponent has the backing of the Atlantic County Democratic Committee. In 2018, 41% of Democratic primary votes were cast in Atlantic County.
“I am supporting Brigid, because South Jersey deserves more than ‘better.’ It deserves the best,” Johnson said. “In Atlantic City, we laid a foundation for shared prosperity. With a real partner in Washington who is a real leader in NJ, we can overcome the COVID19 crisis and tear down the barriers to justice and equality that still block the path to full participation for all of us.”
