Alan Bond is an independent candidate for Congress in the April 16 special election in New Jersey’s 11th district. He was not invited to participate in today’s debate between Democrat Analilia Mejia and Republican Joe Hathaway, but the New Jersey Globe agreed to post his response.
OPENING STATEMENT
Good evening. My name is Alan Bond, and I am running as an independent candidate for Congress in New Jersey’s 11th District because many residents feel they are not being fully represented by the two-party system.
Across Morris, Essex, and Passaic counties, I hear the same concerns: affordability, infrastructure, public safety, and restoring confidence in government. Families are working harder but finding it more difficult to keep up with rising costs. Commuters need reliable transportation investments like the Gateway Tunnel. Seniors want Social Security protected. And voters want practical leadership instead of political division.
I am running to bring common-sense, independent problem solving to Washington — leadership that listens first and works with anyone willing to deliver results for our district.
SELECTED RESPONSES TO DEBATE QUESTIONS
Affordability
Affordability is the number one issue I hear from families across New Jersey’s 11th District. People are doing everything right and still falling behind. My approach is practical: reduce federal tax pressure on middle-income households, protect Social Security and Medicare, lower prescription drug costs through competition, and invest in infrastructure like the Gateway Tunnel that strengthens regional employment. Washington needs fewer slogans and more results that lower real household expenses.
Immigration Enforcement
We need secure borders and a lawful immigration system, but we also need policies that reflect American values. Immigration enforcement should remain a federal responsibility carried out professionally and transparently. Congress should strengthen the legal immigration process, increase immigration court capacity, and ensure enforcement is focused on safety — not fear. Security and dignity can exist together.
Israel and U.S. Foreign Aid
Israel is one of America’s closest allies, and its security matters deeply. At the same time, Congress has a responsibility to ensure U.S. foreign aid reflects both strategic interests and humanitarian principles. I support strong security cooperation with Israel while encouraging diplomacy that protects civilians and promotes long-term regional stability.
Authorization of Military Force
Sending American troops into combat is one of the most serious votes a member of Congress can make. I would support deployment only when U.S. national security is directly threatened, when objectives are clearly defined, and when diplomacy and sanctions have been exhausted. Our service members deserve leadership that treats that decision with the gravity it requires.
Gateway Tunnel Project
The Gateway Tunnel project is essential to the economic future of North Jersey and the entire Northeast Corridor. I would work with both parties to secure consistent federal funding and prevent it from becoming a political bargaining tool. Reliable rail infrastructure supports jobs, commuters, and regional growth.
CLOSING STATEMENT
This election offers voters an opportunity to choose independent leadership focused on solutions rather than party labels.
New Jersey’s 11th District deserves a representative who will protect affordability, strengthen infrastructure, support our allies responsibly, and work across the aisle to move legislation forward. I am committed to representing every community in this district and ensuring their voices are heard in Congress.
If elected, I will approach every decision with one question in mind: what improves the lives of the people of this district?
Thank you for your consideration.
