After earning endorsements in recent weeks from Senator Bernie Sanders (I-Vermont) and Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minnesota), Adam Hamawy’s campaign for the 12th congressional district now has the support of another prominent congressional progressive: Rep. Ro Khanna (D-California).

“Dr. Adam Hamawy has served our country through his work as a 9/11 responder, Army surgeon, and volunteer on medical missions to war and disaster zones, including in Gaza,” Khanna said in a statement. “I am proud to endorse his campaign and look forward to working with him in Congress to make the wealthy pay their fair share of taxes, stop endless wars, and win Medicare for All.”

Hamawy is one of 12 Democrats seeking to succeed Rep. Bonnie Watson Coleman (D-Ewing), and while everyone in the Democratic primary is running as a progressive to some degree, Hamawy has worked to present himself as the most left-wing option – and the one with the most national progressive support.

Khanna, for his part, has waded into New Jersey politics frequently this cycle. He endorsed now-Rep. Analilia Mejia (D-Glen Ridge) in the special election for the 11th congressional district and Megan O’Rourke for the 7th congressional district, though O’Rourke has since ended her campaign; he also came to Bridgewater last year for a town hall targeting local Rep. Tom Kean Jr. (R-Westfield).
