Gustafson loans campaign $100k, a major boost to her fundraising

Norcross has raised $1.6 million in strongly Democratic district

Claire Gustafson, the Republican nominee for New Jersey’s 1st congressional district, announced today that she has loaned her campaign $100,000, a significant addition to the $38,650 she has raised so far from donors.

“Between our data and anecdotal evidence that Democrats have numbers very similar to our numbers we know we have our best chance at finally kicking the political cartel out of South Jersey,” Gustafson said in a statement. “We are in it to win it. That’s why after much prayer and discussion with my family I have decided to make a sizable investment in my own campaign.”

Last week, Gustafson’s campaign released a poll that showed her trailing Rep. Donald Norcross (D-Camden) by just five points, 49-44%, in a district that typically gives Democrats margins of 20 points or more. Norcross has raised almost $1.6 million so far this cycle, and is not expected to be in significant danger of losing in the general election.

“I’m not a wealthy woman,” Gustafson said. “I am hopeful my investment gets donors off the sidelines because we know this race is going to cost more than $100,000.”

Gustafson’s investment in her campaign makes her one of several New Jersey Republicans who are partially or fully bankrolling their campaigns this cycle. Most of the nearly $500,000 11th district nominee Paul DeGroot has raised so far has come from his own pockets, while 3rd district nominee Bob Healey Jr. has put more than a million dollars into his race.
