Former Gov. Jim Florio endorsed Democratic House challenger Amy Kennedy Friday.
“As a former teacher who’s participated in active shooter training, Amy understands what’s at stake if we do not pass gun reform laws,” Florio said. “Amy will fight for the common-sense safety measures supported by the American public: universal background checks, keeping firearms out of the hands of abusers, and closing gun sale loopholes.”
Florio headed the state’s executive branch between 1990 and 1994. He lost re-election after passing $2.8 billion tax increase to fund education in low-income school districts, pay for certain property tax relief programs, and balance the state budget.
On Friday, he took a shot at Rep. Jeff Van Drew (R-Dennis) over his defection to the Republican party, charging the congressman’s move was little more than opportunism.
“Jeff Van Drew has proven he’s more concerned with his political career than improving the lives of South Jerseyans and has chosen to take the side of President Trump and the NRA over his constituents,” Florio said. “I look forward to seeing the positive change Amy brings to our state and our community.”
