Atlantic County Freeholder Ashley Bennett declined to clearly say whether she would run her own slate of local candidates in six counties where Democratic chairs have backed a different Democrat seeking the second district’s House seat.
“I intend to run and to hear the voters because the conventions have not happened, let’s be clear, and voters have an opportunity to support who they would like to support,” she said. “So, by any means this is not already wrapped up. It has just begun.”
Six of the district’s county chairs — Cape May, Cumberland, Burlington, Camden, Gloucester, and Salem — and Senate President Steve Sweeney have endorsed political science professor Brigid Harrison’s House bid.
Atlantic County Chairman Michael Suleiman and Ocean County Chairman Wyatt Earp have yet to back a candidate.
While no Democratic county committees in the second have held nominating conventions, it’s unlikely that they will break from the endorsements made by their county chairs.
West Cape May County Commissioner John Francis III has said he would run on the Democratic side, and Amy Kennedy has launched a committee to explore a bid in the second district.
