The political action committee for UNITE HERE Local 54, a union representing hospitality workers in South Jersey and eastern Pennsylvania, today endorsed Democrat Tim Alexander in New Jersey’s 2nd congressional district.
“Tim will be fighting to bring good union jobs to our district to rebuild our infrastructure, expand rail and bus public transportation, and connect the AC Airport to Atlantic City via light rail,” Local 54 chairperson Robert McDevitt said in a statement. “Tim Alexander’s positions reflect the values of our union and our district. We need to send him to Washington to fight for us.”
Alexander, a civil rights lawyer, will go up in November against Rep. Jeff Van Drew (R-Dennis), the former Democratic state senator-turned Trump-supporting congressman.
While the district is competitive on paper and Van Drew won by a relatively close six-point margin in 2020, Alexander is regarded as the heavy underdog this year. The 2nd district was redrawn to be slightly more conservative under the state’s new congressional map, and Alexander has struggled with fundraising, accumulating around $325,000 total compared to Van Drew’s $2.5 million.
