A poll in New Jersey’s 7th district shows Rep. Leonard Lance (R-Clinton) with a 44%-30% favorable/unfavorable rating and President Donald Trump narrowly at an upside-down 46%-50%. Trump has, albeit barely, a net positive job approval rate of 49%-48%.
The poll was conducted on June 12-14 by the Global Strategy Group for Equity Forward, a watchdog group formed by a former Planned Parenthood official from Maplewood to force transparency among anti-reproductive health groups. Some results of the poll were first reported by POLITICO New Jersey.
The issues polled would normally be good news for Lance’s Democratic opponent, former Assistant U.S. Secretary of State Tom Malinowski: for 53% of voters prefer a congressman who opposes the Trump’s now-rescinded plan to separate migrant children from their families. And most voters back making the Office of Refugee Resettlement more accountable and transparent. Malinowski’s challenge will be to convince voters that Lance is allied with Trump on immigration issues, a point that the five-term Republican congressman will likely dispute.
Congressional Democrats have favorables of 34%-55%, while congressional Republicans are viewed better at 37%-46%.
Not surprisingly, 7th district voters have absolutely no clue who U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services Alex Azar is. The poll shows Azar with favorables of 2% and unfavorables of 3%/
Voters in Lance’s district are mostly pro-choice – 57% top 36% who were identified as pro-life, according to the poll.
Equity Forward is run by Mary Alice Carter, a former vice president of communications at Planned Parenthood of America.
