A politically influential union with members in New Jersey’s 10th district has endorsed Rep. Donald Payne, Jr. (D-Newark) for re-election to the U.S. House of Representatives.
Payne, a congressman since 2012, faces two challengers in the Democratic primary. Support from progressive labor groups like 32BJ Service Employees International Union (SEIU) make it increasingly impossible for a candidate to unseat Payne.
“Congressman Payne has been a longtime advocate for these same principles in Washington, where he has worked to enhance collective bargaining rights and expand healthcare access, while also being a vocal supporter for workers attempting to unionize,” said Kevin Brown, 32BJ SEIU Vice President and New Jersey state director. “We are excited to endorse him and look forward to continuing to work together in service of labor rights and economic equality.”
Payne has amassed a huge number of labor endorsements, including the NJEA, CWA, AFSCME, FMBA and the Laborers’ International Union of North America.
“Ensuring that every worker in our country has the right to a livable wage, fair working conditions, and benefits like health insurance is imperative for economic justice and prosperity,” Payne said. “In our current political moment, we are seeing an inspiring resurgence of organizing around labor rights in our country, and I am dedicated to working to advance these efforts alongside 32BJ and so many others in the labor movement.”
