Democrats pick candidate to run for Thompson’s Senate seat

Brandon Rose, who has spent 26 years in law enforcement at the New Jersey State Parole Board, will replace Sam Thompson (D-Old Bridge) as the Democratic candidate for State Senate in the 12th district.

Thompson switched parties last month after Republicans made it clear they thought the 87-year-old lawmaker should retire and were backing Old Bridge Mayor Owen Henry for his seat.  He initially said he would run for re-election as a Democrat, but changed his mind two weeks later and announced his retirement.

This is Rose’s second bid for public office.  He ran for councilman in Jackson in 2018 and lost by a margin of almost 2-1 in a non-partisan election to a slate headed by now-Assemblyman Alex Sauickie (R-Jackson).

Middlesex County Democrats tonight voted to award the line for Senate to Rose, and to Raya Arbiol of Old Bridge and Paul Sarti of Jackson for Assembly in the 12th district.  Sarti was Rose’s running mate in the Jackson council race, and lost a special election to Sauickie last year.
