State Sen. Joseph Cryan (D-Union) has endorsed Senate President Nick Scutari for re-election in 2027, both for his Senate seat in the 22nd district and for Union County Democratic chairman.

“Nick has proven he’s the effective leadership we need in Trenton and in Union County for the foreseeable future,” said Cryan.

The endorsement is further evidence of a continued thaw in the relationship between the two Democratic senators, who have sparred in the past.

“Nick has been incredibly effective at leading our caucus and building consensus in the State Senate as well as the Democratic Party in Union County through moments of both challenge and uncertainty,” Cryan said. “His compassion for working families and his determination to protect vulnerable communities reflect our shared core Democratic values.”

Scutari, a Clark Democrat,  is expected to return the favor and endorse Cryan for re-election soon.  Cryan represents the adjacent 20th district.

“Joe Cryan has been a key part of our team in Trenton as well as our Democratic team in Union County,” said Scutari. “With his support in place, we are stronger and more united as we work towards winning the critical midterm elections and tackling the problems facing taxpayers and families throughout New Jersey.”

In 2021, Scutari backed Cryan for re-election in a Democratic primary against Assemblyman Jamel Holley (D-Roselle).

Cryan, the Union Township Democratic municipal chairman, supported Scutari for Senate President three times since 2021, when Democrats unexpectedly found themselves in need of a replacement for Steve Sweeney.

“The simple math is we now have more Democrats elected throughout Union County than at any other time in history,” stated Cryan.  “With the 2026 midterm and 2028 Presidential elections approaching, I can think of no one better suited than Nick Scutari to continue serving in the State Senate and as Chairman of the Democratic Party in Union County through 2027 and beyond.”
