Lest anyone doubt the massive reach of Democratic powerbroker George E. Norcross III, consider this: the U.S. Secretary of Housing and Urban Development is coming to Camden on Wednesday – six days before the mayoral primary – to stand next to Mayor Vic Carstarphen.
U.S. Senator Bob Menendez and Rep. Donald Norcross will join HUD Secretary Marcia Fudge to announce a major investment by the federal government into the redevelopment of distressed housing and economic growth in the city.
Gov. Phil Murphy was with Carstarphen today and his formal endorsement is expected within the next day or so.
Carstarphen, a local basketball legend who became mayor after Frank Moran resigned on April 30, has the Camden County Democratic organization line. That gives him a leg up in the race, especially with Murphy at the top of his ticket.
He races Elton Custis, a member of the Camden City School District Advisory Board, City Councilwoman Felicia Reyes-Morton and teacher Luis Quinones in the June 8 Democratic primary.
