Atlantic Democrats will vote to postpone county committee elections

By David Wildstein, April 08 2020 9:55 am

Atlantic County Democrats will hold a virtual meeting of the full county committee to vote on the postponement of their terms until 2021.

Party leader scheduled the May 7 online vote after Superior Court Judge James Savio ruled yesterday that a vote of the executive board was insufficient and reopened the petition process.

Cape May Democrats, whose move to extend their terms during the coronavirus crisis was also invalidated in court, are expected to do the same.

Savio strongly hinted that he would view the matter differently if the full county committee had voted to extend their terms in a vote to change the party by-laws rather than just a vote by the executive committee.

“Last night, I talked to many municipal chairs and county committee members to see what they wanted to do. The overwhelming consensus among these individuals was to postpone the election,” Suleiman said.  “They were adamant that they would have difficulties collecting signatures, since they cannot do this in person and were not risking their health for an election which can most certainly wait until next year.”
