Group seeks undercover interns in MacArthur office

An attempt to infiltrate the office of a Republican congressman to New Jersey with undercover interns is under fire from the target of their efforts, Rep. Tom MacArthur (R-Toms River). MacArthur released a post from a private Facebook group, Action Together Burlington County, that was recruiting activists to seek an internship in MacArthur’s congressional office. Kelly Brennan Clark, who created the initial Facebook post, is a former Democratic candidate for

Stack, Fulop not inclined to back DeGise re-election

Two key Hudson County Democratic leaders are not backing Hudson County Executive Tom DeGise for re-election next year, exponentially increasing the likelihood that DeGise will retire. Sources say that Union City Mayor Brian Stack and Jersey City Mayor Steve Fulop think it’s time for DeGise to go.  Both think county government has become a bit stale and are looking to make a change. DeGise has been facing criticism recently for

What if GOP ran a Muslim for Congress?

Essex County Republican Chairman Al Barlas has positioned himself as one of the most powerful people in the race to succeed Rodney Frelinghuysen in Congress.  His alliance with Passaic County’s Peter Murphy means that the road to the Republican nomination runs through the two counties.  That means in lineless Morris, where the field of prospective congressional candidates seems to be growing, the support of the Barlas/Murphy block could be critical. Some insiders

Mastrangelo could run in 11th

Morris County Freeholder Tom Mastrangelo is interested in running for Rodney Frelinghuysen's congressional seat, but seems conflicted over his loyalties to two other prospective candidates: Assemblywoman Betty Lou DeCroce and Assemblyman Anthony M. Bucco. If neither decides to enter the race, expect Mastrangelo to consider entering the 11th district Republican primary. Mastrangelo, a three-term freeholder, is looking to position himself for a State Assembly seat, if there is a vacancy

McCann praises Trump address

Republican congressional candidate John McCann went all in for President Trump tonight, saying that the president's State of the Union message "showed us how far we have come in just a short year and what it means to Make America Great Again. Making America Great means a strong economy, rebuilding the infrastructure, a fully funded military and affordable healthcare." McCann says that the first year of the Trump presidency included

MacArthur echos Trump pitch for bi-partisanship

Rep. Tom MaArthur (R-Toms River) says that he supports President Trump's call for greater bi-partisanship on major issues. "I echo the President’s call for more bipartisanship on the big issues facing our nation. Republicans and Democrats must be willing to trust one another and compromise more in order to achieve results that the American people deserve," MacArthur said.  "Both parties have the same goal of wanting to improve the lives

Jois wants a tunnel, not a wall

Democratic congressional candidate Goutam Jois says that "the state of our infrastructure is pathetic." Jois, a Summit attorney, is seeking the 7th district seat of Rep. Leonard Lance (R-Clinton). "I was glad to hear the President turn his attention to fixing our crumbling infrastructure, but the devil is in the details," Jois said.  "One year into his administration, we've heard a lot about his $25 billion wall, but no commitment

Governor Murphys’ Grade Today

Today is Phil Murphy’s 15th day in office.  He’s now into week two, so the honeymoon of getting a check plus for doing no wrong is over.   Still, the Governor had a good day. He appointed a new executive director of New Jersey Transit, a seasoned infrastructure executive.  The assumption is that Murphy’s team has figured out how Kevin Corbett can obviate any conflicts that come with his prior job

Ruiz back Scutari for County Chairman

Senate President Pro Tempore Teresa Ruiz (D-Newark) has endorsed her colleague, State Sen. Nicholas Scutari (D-Linden) for Union County Democratic Chairman. "I have personally seen Nick Scutari fight to defend our Democratic principles.  Nick has stood with me to fully fund public education; he fought passionately to restore funding critical for women’s healthcare; and he led our fight to keep unqualified nominees out of our court system," Ruiz said.  "He’s

Murphy pulls out of Clean Power suit

New Jersey will withdraw as a plaintiff in a lawsuit against the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) that seeks to overturn President Obama’s Clean Power Plan regulations. The suit was filed by West Virginia Attorney General Patrick Morrisey, a New Jersey native who sought the Republican nomination for Congress against Mike Ferguson in New Jersey’s seventh district eighteen years ago.  He is now seeking the GOP nomination to run against
